AHAA Users Guides

Last Updated: June 27, 2008

The Users' Guides provide extensive descriptions of AHAA measures, including how they were constructed and how they should be used and interpreted for analytic purposes. Standard conventions for naming the indicators, the missing codes applied to the indicators, the distributions of the indicators, and an inventory of data files are also included. In order to read or print the User's Guides you will need to install the Adobe Acrobat Reader. This shareware can be downloaded from Adobe.com.

For a brief summary of the released data, see the First Release page. We will post additional user's guides as they become available. All data is being released in multiple stages as a part of Add Health Wave III. Currently, there have been three releases of AHAA education data which are detailed below:

The Academic Networks file contains information on the data files edunet.xpt, educov94.xpt, and educov95.xpt. These files provide detailed information about the construction and distributions of all academic network variables based on the respondents' course-taking patterns.
Contextual Data (Updated April 2007)
The Contextual Data user's guide is for the data files educcd1.xpt and edupss.xpt. Not all the variables from the Contextual Data component are currently released. The user's guide provides information about all variables in this component, whether they are currently released or are scheduled for a future release.
The variables created from the Private School Survey have been released in full (except ECPRMISS, an indicator for the private school missing survey data; this will be released at a future date). As of March 2007, no variables from the U.S. Census Data have been released (they are scheduled for a future release). Approximately half of the indicators created from the Common Core Data are currently released. To see a list of the available CCD variables, go here.
Transitions

The Transitions User's guide is for the data file edutrans.xpt, which contains data explaining the respondents' movement through the educational system. Available measures include middle school students’ transitioning to high school and student transfers between Wave I and Wave II.
Primary Data (Updated April 2007)
This user's guide is for the file edustd1.xpt. Currently, only one variable is available from the primary data: the last school attended by the respondents. Additional releases of other primary indicators outlined in the User's Guide will be made at a future date.
