Research Interests

Education and stratification; Adolescence and the transition to adulthood; Schools and the social processes in them

Research with AHAA
I enjoy researching questions using each of the AHAA components from the curriculum content data to the academic networks.  For example, I’m studying access to and effects of curricular exposure in math and science as well as the impact of peer groups and extracurricular activities on adolescents’ development.  Most of all, I love the possibilities for improving our understanding of schools and adolescence by studying the connections between these different aspects of adolescents’ lives and experiences.

Grants and Projects

National Science Foundation (NSF), “GSE/RES Gender Differences in Science and Math: Diversity and the Role of Social Context,” (with Catherine Riegle-Crumb).

Russell Sage Foundation, “The Roles of Language and Education in Adolescent Immigrants’ Civic Integration during the Transition to Adulthood,” (with Rebecca M. Callahan)

William T. Grant Foundation, “Adolescent Development and the Social Organization of Schools, Pilot Study” (with Jacquelynne Eccles).

National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD), “Adolescent Health and Academic Achievement”.

Personal Information

I live with my husband, Bill Beckner, our two teenage daughters, Amalia and Chiara, and our two dogs.  I like to spend my free time at Town Lake, in my garden, reading, hiking, keeping track of current events and traveling with my family. As a certifiable nerd, I would rather study adolescents than be one.
